Althea Petal Velvet Powder have been making quite a few rounds on Instagram lately, especially by beauty enthusiasts from Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and even the USA!
If you haven't seen or heard about this face powder, it's the FIRST EVER product produced by ALTHEA, a website that is focused on bringing Korean beauty products to the world!

This debuting beauty is a translucent powder that sets makeup and leaves behind a silky finish to the touch. MY THOUGHTS
🌸 Product & Packaging 🌸
When I first received the package, I thought to myself "This is such a compact face powder, which is reminiscence of Innisfree's No Sebum Mineral Powder. The Althea's size of 3g is the exact same like Innisfree's Birthday edition 3g (Innisfree's regular one is 5g). However Althea's powder is slimmer in height, which makes it less bulky. Since the packaging is compact, it really is convenient to throw this into my handbag to dust my nose throughout the day.
It's matte baby pink cover and smooth transparent bottom jar is made of sturdy plastic but it doesn't feel too fragile. Personally I love the colour pink, so this is a WIN for me; it is also a true representation of Althea's iconic pink website and packages. This product comes with a 13mm thick, soft white puff with a loop for your fingers. TBH, I do not use loose powder puffs as I believe using loose powder with brushes for that airbrushed look.
The website states that the powder is measured 10µm (micrometres), which means the powder itself is superfine and is lightweight. Because of its tiny size, it fits into the pores easily and blurs imperfections like a gem.

Coincidently, the Althea flower is the main ingredient used to make this powder!

The flower has natural antioxidants that protect the skin's barrier from dehydration by increasing moisture levels.
Polyphenols acts as a form of sun protection by protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
Saponarin helps to repair damaged skin cells and restores elasticity to premature aging skin.
100% pure silica to blur pores and create a velvety smooth finish!
🌸 Scent 🌸
Scent wise, Althea's Petal Velvet Powder has a faint citrus scent. It doesn't bother me much though I have sensitive skin.
🌸 Coverage 🌸
Since the powder is translucent and very fine, it really does ease the application onto the skin. Just a tiny bit of this and you will see that any reflective shine is GONE!
I use this powder around my T-zone areas (foreheads, nose, chin) and it's NOT meant to be used as a under eye baking powder because of its silica properties (silica is known to set off flashbacks in flash photography, see pics here).
The trick to using 100% silica powders (like the Make Up For Ever HD Loose Powder) is to USE IT SPARINGLY. Also you can check your makeup with snapping a photo with flash on, before stepping out the door to avoid this beauty faux pas.
🌸 Longevity 🌸
I'm glad to say that I did not find any caking by the end of the day. It extended the wear time of my foundation and my makeup didn't fade as much as it would without using a loose powder.
Thus this definitely does as what it claims!

Priced at RM16 for 3g, thus making it RM5.33 per gram.
If used everyday, I believe this will last around a month or so. Remember to go light handed with this!

OVERALL THOUGHTS
I really appreciate Althea making an effort to create quality products at a fraction cost, but I think I would like to have a powder that can be used to also bake the under eyes. Personally I do not have oily skin thus oil-control is not a huge concern of mine.
Who will like this?
People with oily skin who like to keep shine at bay.
Retouching is easy and the size of the powder is convenient for travels.
Repurchase?
Maybe not because I'd prefer a multi-purpose powder that can be used for baking too!
